Our group13 Sailing is consist of three people with different background and experiences and we all have a strong teamwork spirits. Through various collaboration with other teams and the exercises that we accomplished in this course bring a deeply impact to me. Practices on presenting and exchanging our opinions to each other and experience different road like avoid, accommodate, compete and finally comes to our collaboration achieve our target. I actually get a lot of benefits and practical experiences on collaboration from this course.
Comes to the first part is the intro-collaboration in our team. Only three people in our group due to we didn’t elect out a group leader, we are equal and democratic on sharing our perspectives and opinions. Sometimes I acted as a leader to make appointment by coordinating our group member’s time to hold our group meetings and discussions. If we have an assignment or project, two meetings a week usually hold to discuss our project and assign the missions of each group members. Every time we run into an problem, all the team members are trying to solve it immediately. Such as one of our team member which has a strong characteristic and always hold some creative novel ideas, but the other member is a little bit realistic more likely to choose some formal and regular way tackling problem. Many times it can cause some conflicts in our team. But I always try to integrate both of their ideas and extract some essence of their views and try to coordinate the conflict and work out a win-win solution. An other conflict comes out with me and one of my group mates is about the PPT’s background. I stay up night on integrating our team member’s powerpoints of our presentation, but he is not satisfy with the background and require to use his own one. But in my perspective, his background is not that much suit for our theme and active and colorful features. Finally, after our discuss and negotiation I accept part of his views and only changed his background but adjust the formal and arrangement as same as our other team members also make an note to explain his part is an analysis and research segment. The slight difference can distinguish his function is an development part in our process and also meet his demands to some extent.
The most important trait on intra-collaboration is that we have the common interests and we all want to achieve our goals on the case study or exercises. Although some conflicts and disagreement possibility appeared into the discussion process, but it can also an incentive way to help us perfect the results in an other perspective. Because just simply integrate group member’s mind together doesn’t necessarily ensure we can function effectively as a team or make appropriate decisions. Teams are naturally composed of people with different emotional and social needs which the team can either frustrate or help to meet. Teamwork indifference is a strategy likely to result in mediocre performance. Our group possesses several advantages in our working process. Firstly, the outcome shared visions are all focus on the development of team goals and the commitment by team members to understand and identify with one another’s goals. Furthermore, honesty and frankness always appears among our team members. But, sometimes we also run into some disorganization or misunderstanding problems and we can not find an inadequate ways for the problem-solving. Then, our team function can be weakened by obstacles faced by individual members within the team, as well as by difficulties linked to the task. Through our groups smoothly collaboration and several problem-solving processes I figure out some benefits in the successful teams as below:
Firstly, we should improvement the participants’ confidence, attitudes, motivation and personal satisfaction and every participants must have great clarity in expressing their own opinions through the group discussion. Secondly, every participant must use the resources more efficiently, such as the reading materials, coursework and especially the time. On the time management, we should pay more focus on our positive outcomes instead of handling the problems which can get a greater optimism. Thirdly, work out more creative ideas as much as possible because more choice can bring out higher platform to implement our strategy. Lastly ,we should take more effective response to changes because the improved trust and communication can help the team to adapt to new circumstances.
The other crucial part is inter-collaboration which means through several negotiations like avoid, compete, compromise and collaborate to arrive the win-win outcomes. Different from intra-collaboration, it is may cause more conflict and problems with improper ways on communication and negotiation. The cooperate team which stands on opposite position and both of them want to get more benefit on the basis of holding own business. Some real cases through our collaboration processes with another team on our same final project can illustrate some experiences.
Firstly, we send emails friendly each other to build our first communication. We use email choose skype as our communication tool to discuss details of our project. There is nearly no conflict on this segment. But, when we make appointment online several members of both the teams can not always online on time. Sometimes the no punctuality makes me very angry because I think it may decrease the efficiency to an great extend. On this problem we always can not find an solution because everyone has his/her own things and works to handle, so we just ignore it and select a representative to share the information that comes out from the different perspective. If any problem comes out, the representative will transmit the information to the other group members. Then, another difficulty is case selection for the final project. The morning team work out with an solution as an collaboration between the real estate and renters from different countries via an virtual social website to find their roommates in HONGKONG. But ,it is not creative and novel and has already used in today’s society in our groups opinion. Our group’s idea is about an long-term collaboration between an electronic manufacture factory and an brand marketing company. But they views that it doesn’t actually through an virtual organization to implement the collaboration and also not suit for professor’s requirement on the project. We bargain for a few days and finally come to agreement which is try to find out an optimal one can integrate both creative and meet professor’s requirement solutions reach to an win-win negotiation.Then, we work out the existing case that is to achieve the collaboration between furniture manufacturer and 100% furniture design company via sales website.
The last problem comes out in our final project is the packaging process of furniture. The morning team states the products on the market should use their logo and our company’s logo should print on the package boxes. One of my group mate was strongly object to this advice and he thought our representative company is the primary product producer why we can only got a small logo on the packaging box?
That’s what my group mate mentioned in our group’s presentation. Actually, we didn’t really solved this conflict at all. Firstly, our group want to argue with them on this problem, but they showed a lot of cases to persuade us. In terms of due time and we resolve this problem by printing our company’s logo on the packaging cardboard and printing their company’s logo on the furniture.
Just as the references assigned by professor illustrate that virtually all negotiators want to reach integrative agreements, however, most of them fail to do so, resulting in money and resources being lefting on the table. In reality, people are not usually aware that their negotiation outcomes are inefficient. The key reasons for lose-lose outcomes are illusory conflict and the dixed-pie perception. The successful creation of win-win negotiation deals involves perspective-taking, asking questions about your priorities and preference, unbundling issues, making packaging deals and tructuring contingency contracts that capitalize on difference in negotiators’ beliefs, expectations and attitudes. In my perspective, a good negotiator must has excellence performance on communicating and social working. And full of confidence to work out the win-win solutions of the problems with the collaborators.
However, both intra-collaboration and inter-collaboration can generate some conflicts and problems. We would better not avoid them but resolve them in proper way. A conflict always comes out with one party perceives that another party has negatively affected something that the first party cares about. In traditional perspective, people assume that conflict is bad thing. It can lead to some violence, destruction, irrationality and can cause poor communication, lack of openness and failure to respond to the employee needs. But another novel view is that all the conflicts are not avoidable and it’s going to happen, just cope with it in time!
The diagram above showed the process of why the conflicts come out and the how to find a solution. The conflicts often generated by potential oppositions or incompatibilities, such as the semantic difficulties and misunderstanding during the communication and the personal variable characteristics. Then, the intentions during the management process include collaborating, avoiding, accommodating and compromising. Initially, I would like to choose avoiding because I don’t like any different conflicts and arguments. After the study of this course, my views totally changed and I think it is low concern for relationship and goals just keep avoiding and also I can not get the benefits and profits of my own. So, on the basis of satisfy other’s interest, regardless of the impact on my views to the conflict, try our best to get a win-win solution to enhance the performance of the collaboration.
A lot of methods can solve the conflict such as win-win negotiation to satisfy both sides’ need. Structured problem solving means to gather data about the problem and find a third party observer analyze the data and make an argument for one side. Confronting conflict is listen the problem and help the parties resolve it. Finally if we choose an winner, we should deal with the negative feelings between the two parties which can stimulate our long-term collaboration ship. If we can not choose the better choice just try to selecting a better alternative. Like the case selection during our inter-collaboration with the other team. Now I oppositely think that the passive conflict resolution to ignore the conflict is the last choice. A good leader is not to avoid conflicts but find the win-win outcome to resolve it.
The last part is about our group’s team process. Our group is new and everyone is happy and welcoming with low conflict. when our group has problems; common issues include unclear goals, conflict between team members, lack of motivation, lack of team norms, and social loafing. conflict occurs and members of the group must decide how we will deal with conflict. when our team gets past the storming phase, team members have experience working out internal conflicts and are more in tune with the norms and expectations of the team and how we are motivated to obtain our goals. This is a stage of high productivity as the group achieves synergy between the members. The team disbands because the team objectives have been met. some teams do not go through this process except as members rotate out of the groups.
We introduced ourselves in the first course. Each of us has our own strengths and weakness so we make commitment to each other we will try our best to accomplish our every exercises, assignments and projects. I am good at drawing pictures, take and process photos, so I also make a commitment to my group mates that I will handle all the process of our group’s logo, and blog design and so on. Frank is good at statement and argument, so he make a commitment to assure our creative ideas and conclusions can states clearly to our listeners or the collaborate teams. Chris is a talent writer and she can record synchronously the outcomes of our weekly discussion and make an analysis and conclude the core point. During our intra-collaboration, all of my team members can fulfill our promises and strive for a good performance during every assignment. Although conflicts appear in our collaboration regularly, but we can always solve it out in time. I deeply believe that every member of our group Sailing won a lot of benefits and experiences which has upgraded ourselves to some extent and can generate a far-reaching impact on our collaborate ability that can benefits our career in our future.
